The neighbourhood between Raspail and Denfert-Rochereau, which features in Puccini’s La Bohème, has quietened down in recent years. Only the edgy Cartier Foundation, in its glass cocoon on Boulevard Raspail, livens up the neighbourhood on exhibition opening nights. Just around the corner on Rue Campagne Première, the magnificent façade of the artists' studio block – with duplex residences – a blend of Art Nouveau and Art Déco, inspires admiration. Today, artists live closer to the Rue Daguerre, a semi-pedestrian street where locals come to buy fresh produce. Another world-famous attraction is the Catacombs. This ossuary of Parisian cemeteries is found in a small corner of the ancient underground quarries that run 20 metres below the capital’s streets. Every day a long line of tourists wait quietly at the entrance, on Place Denfert-Rochereau, to visit this mysterious vestige of Paris’ long history.
