The building of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in a formerly rundown, Seine-side part of the 13th arrondissement, was the most expensive of an array of hugely ambitious projects whereby President Mitterand left his indelible stamp on modern Pais. Whatever you think of the library (and it has plenty of detractors) there’s no doubt that it has led to an extraordinary revitalisation of the neighbourhood around it. There’s a new university here now, a growing business district, cafés, shops, cinemas, schools and even a floating swimming pool moored on the Seine. Accommodation-wise, the area has a good selection of well-priced condo-style apartments.
