Located between Port Royal and the Montparnasse tower, it is at the border of the 6th and 14th arrondissement. The name of the district comes from a joke made by students referring to the Greek mythology: there was a pile of rubble they used to compare it to the Mont Parnasse (supposed to be a mountain where muses used to live).
The unpretentious Montparnasse strikes a good balance with its restaurants (la Rotonde), buzzing cafés (Café Select), brasseries (la Coupole) where Picasso and his mates put 1930s Paris to rights, a cemetery with plenty of personality- Cimetière de Montparnasse (singer Serge Gainsbourg, philosopher Sartre), urban grit in shape of a mainline train station (very well-served district) and ugly tower with panoramic views to challenge Miss Eiffel.
