One of the wellspring of Parisian myth, from its days as a simple village on a 328 feet hill on the north of the capital. Recently, it has provided inspiration for the big screen such as Moulin Rouge (2001), and Amelie (2002). It is the peak of Paris and one of the most visited places: tourists flock to the steps of the Basilique du Sacré Coeur and wander through the narrow hillside lanes that gives Montmartre so much of its allure; the place du Tertre where Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh or Pissarro lived.
You can go for a walk at the old “Montmartre art attack” where its picturesque charm and low rent attracted painters and writers: Moulin Rouge, Musée de l’Erotisme, Café des Deux Moulins, Van Gogh’s house, Au Lapin Agile, Eglise Saint Pierre de Montmartre and the Musée de Montmartre.
