Placed in the 14th arrondissement, it is a residential district and a little bit out of center but cheaper! There are a lot of shops, bars, restaurants and cinemas. The place Denfert Rochereau was established over what was the Barrière d’enfer (Hell’s tollgate) of the 18th century. The installation of the Catacombs was completed in 1811. After walking down some 90 steps you find yourself in a narrow gallery, nearly 20m underground.
Many of parks and green places such as Montsouris (2nd largest park in Paris and designed by Jean Charles Alphand) punctuate this district which is well known to be calm, peaceful.
Then close to Alesia you find the Rue des Artistes, a village street of small houses- another and quitter world; and the Villa Seurat, a charming cobbled alley bordered with small houses, almost artists’ studios.
